There is a lot of click-bait out there that promises to help aspiring writers go from making zero to six figures in an unbelievably short amount of time. This sounds amazing-especially if you are in a position where you need to start making money fast. But, like so many other things in life, if it sounds too good to be true…
Now, there are some valuable resources out there to help you get started as a freelancer. And, the programs that make these big promises can probably provide you with helpful tips and advice. The reality is that going from absolutely no writing income to a six figure income in a few months is not how it happens for most writers. That is definitely not how it happened for me.
When I started writing I just needed to get something coming in. Six figures sounded great but before I got there I needed to make my first dollar.
At the point in my life when I got serious about writing my husband was between jobs and we were feeling the pressure of no income. I joined a writing platform, scoured craigslist, and wrote for a friend’s blog. I made my first dollar writing in March of that year and by September I was able to bring in a little over $1,000 dollars in one month. From $0 to $1,000 in six or seven months doesn’t sound nearly as sexy as $0 to six figures, but an extra $1,000 in a month has the potential to be life changing for a lot of people. I know it was for me at that point.
Here’s the breakdown:
As you can see, the numbers went up and down a little bit. You should expect this as you start your writing career. Freelancing is not like a career with a set salary so every month will be unique. But, as you build up your portfolio and find more clients you will be able to create a more stable income.
If you find a way to go from $0 to six figures in writing income per month then by all means, do it! And make sure to fill me in on how you made that happen. I think my journey to the $1,000 per month mark was slowed down by the fact that I was learning through trial and error instead of purposeful training. The fact that you are reading a blog about making money through online writing means that you are being more proactive than I was when I began. Good job, keep learning. Purposeful training and education are the two most important things you can do to speed up your money making potential writing online.
