As I sit here writing this we are two days away from the beginning of a new year and a new decade. I am not embarrassed to admit that I love the new year. I love the process of looking back on the last year to see how far I’ve come (and where I fell short). Planning for the year to come gives me energy and gets me excited about all of the possibilities.
Over the weekend my husband and I sat down to look at how I did over the last year with my work and make plans for the upcoming year. At the beginning of 2019 I set the ambitious goal of doubling my freelance income. And, honestly, I was afraid to keep close tabs on it throughout the year because there was part of me that doubted my ability to reach the goal. Once all of the numbers were added up I was delighted to discover that I did double my freelancing income this year! This is a big deal!
Writing from home provides me with a ton of flexibility with my schedule and my earning potential.
At the end of 2018 I calculated my freelance income and was frustrated by the number. It was a great number compared to the zero dollars I used to make but I didn’t make any upward progress from the previous year. I was holding steady on income but increasing the time I spent working. That’s dumb!
It felt like I was working all the time but the numbers did not accurately reflect how much time I was spending on work. So, at the beginning of 2019 I resolved to double my freelance income. I approached one of the agencies I write for and asked to take over the content calendar. Once I was able to schedule out the content ahead of time I could see how much work I would have each week. This allowed me to be much more efficient with my planning and determine how much space I had on my calendar to add more work.
The second step I took was to start applying for freelance work in other places. By March I had an additional agency to write for that paid me twice as much per piece than the other agency. There was not as much work to be had from them so I held on to both positions. I also applied to a number of other places until my workload (and income) were at the level I wanted. One of the places I applied to did not come through with any work until December. But the work they assigned me pays three times as much per piece as my main gig. I am still waiting to see where this opportunity leads but am hopeful that it will be a big part of me being able to double my income again.
You may be wondering what all of these details about my writing income have to do with your writing career. Well, the girl in the picture below is me back in 2016. I was right at the beginning of my career writing for an agency and so happy to bring in a few hundred dollars a month. If I could go back and tell her that she would be making a full time income writing three days a week in 2019 she would not have believed it. But, here I am, doing just that and you can do it too!
